Cultivo is looking for a passionate Environmental Scientist with a strong commitment to climate change mitigation and expertise on GIS, remote sensing and data science. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates or late semester students to apply their knowledge onto real projects in the field of land restoration. The new hire will be directly reporting to our lead Environmental Data Scientist and will work closely with the Product Team, working toward a robust, innovative and trusted science-first approach to Nature Based Solutions. The candidate will ideally be located in Mexico.

What you’ll be doing

You will contribute to all aspects of scientific development and original research. This includes responsibilities ranging from development of our remote analysis toolset to quantify natural capital, and staying afloat on the latest scientific developments relating to remote science, natural capital, proximal sensor implementation and data analysis, etc.

  • Creation and improvement of scientific products, documentation and data sources management.
  • Design, scope and participate in the development of science products that enable independent monitoring of multiple environmental variables such as degradation level, water, biodiversity, etc.
  • Collaborate on data collection, processing, validation, quality control, exploratory analysis, and production research.
  • Develop, write, and document high quality code using various languages and libraries (mainly Javascript and SQL).
  • Stay abreast of trends in data science, new kinds of data sources and methodologies applicable to NbS quantification and optimization.

What you’ll need

  • BSc+ in an Environmental discipline, Masters preferred.
  • GIS knowledge and experience (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar).
  • Experience in remote sensing-based monitoring using satellite imagery and other data sources, as well as using very large datasets.
  • Programming experience, experience working with Google Earth Engine and with cloud computing platforms is a plus.
  • Experience with empirical, conceptual or process-based modeling, experience working with Machine Learning is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills in English. Spanish is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and the capacity to self-manage.
