A nature-first approach to regeneration

Rooted in nature

Co-founders Manuel Piñuela and James Clifton worked together at their previous venture, a clinical AI and digital health startup, that listed in summer 2018. Taking a well-earned break to recharge in nature after the IPO, Manuel traveled through the UK and was struck by how large areas of land were highly degraded.

Manuel and James, both nature-lovers with young kids, felt the personal urgency to apply their experience to halt and reverse land degradation and build resilient landscapes. They started to explore how AI, environmental sensing, and ground truth data could could help identify degraded land that had the highest potential to be regenerated into healthy ecosystems. From this seed of an idea, rooted in personal conviction and technological innovation, Cultivo took root.

Cultivo (noun): “The devotion of time or attention to the improvement of”

We wanted a name that captured the essence of cultivating, improving, and growing. “Cultivo” means all of these, and it also speaks to our work in global landscape regeneration. As individuals and as a team, we cultivate positive change and growth in every aspect of our work.
